Look around you. What do you see? Your home, your laptop, your jewelry, a cup of coffee, a deck of cards… Your gaze encompasses the objects around you—at home, at work, on the street. Your physical sight observes their shapes, your hands feel their surfaces, and you can describe and feel their texture and form. Your awareness determines what each item is made of and the purpose it serves.
In daily life, we constantly interact with a variety of objects. Not all of these objects possess any magical power, and even fewer are used in magical practice. Not every piece of jewelry becomes a talisman or charm, not every cup is used in a ritual, we don’t take a branch from every tree for runes or ogham, and not every stone is used to create an amulet.
Objects in magic are a vast topic, touching on both the use and creation of objects. Few work with magic and energy without the aid of supplementary items; most come to this over time and experience, or not at all. Ritual magic is directly linked to objects, as is the creation of amulets, talismans, charms, and artifacts.
Tomorrow, I’m beginning the Amulet Magic course, “Basics of Object Magic: Rituals and Artifacts,” where we’ll delve into objects in ritual magic. We’ll discuss items used during rituals and those created as part of the ritual process. This is a foundational course, upon which specialized knowledge from other areas—such as working with specific natural items, their creation, and usage—can later be layered.
