In Gypsy magic, working with the Moon is of great importance, and many spells and rituals are based on appeals to the Moon-Gaena, using lunar energy flows for their processes. For the new lunar month, I present to you my Lunar Story.
My conversation with the Moon will allow you to hear ancient stories from Gypsy shuwanis and introduce you to the trends of the upcoming lunar month. Listen carefully, feel deeply… the Moon is speaking to you.
“How fortunate are the flowers and herbs,” mused Shuwany, stepping carefully along the darkened path to avoid crushing the lush spring blossoms carpeting the forest glades. “Their fate is predetermined—no doubts torment them, no choices must they make. But humans! Always wrestling with complex questions: When is the time ripe for change? Which path to choose? Can their strength match their desires?” So absorbed was she in these thoughts that she nearly missed her sacred meeting place with the Moon—and would have, had the Moon not called out to her.
“Greetings!” Shuwany startled.
“Greetings,” smiled the Moon from the sky. “I see you’re deep in thought, nearly walking right past me.”
“True enough! I’m grappling with a difficult question… though surely you already know it—and the answer too!”
“The question, I know,” agreed the Moon. “The answer? Well, listen…
⛵️ Once there lived a merchant—neither rich nor poor—who kept a humble hardware shop, traded simple goods, lived devoutly, and was known as a kind townsman. He might have lived contentedly, yet he longed for more. He dreamed of buying a ship, sailing to distant lands, and returning with exotic wares to astonish all. For days—nay, years—he pondered this. At last he resolved to act, but first sought a sage’s counsel: Was this endeavor within his power?
The merchant told his tale and posed his question.
“What do you yourself believe?” asked the sage. “Is this within your power?”
“It is!” the merchant exclaimed fervently. “I’ve saved the funds, my desire burns fiercely, and I’ve even charted the route!”
“You’re right,” nodded the sage. “It is within your power. Go forth and act!”
Overjoyed, the merchant raced off, bought a ship, and prepared for his voyage. Yet as preparations lengthened, so did his doubts. What if storms struck at sea? What if he couldn’t find the right goods? What if foreign lands received him with hostility? What if he squandered his savings for naught?
Tormented, he returned to the sage on the eve of departure:
“Doubts plague me! Tell me once more—is this truly within my power?”
“What do you believe?” asked the sage.*
“I don’t know,” sighed the merchant. “The sea has storms, the journey is long, trade may falter… Perhaps it’s beyond me.”
“You’re right,” nodded the sage. “It is beyond you.”
The merchant stood thunderstruck. Recovering, he cried:
“How can this be, sage? You recently said it was within my power! Only then did I buy the ship and provision it! The cargo’s loaded, the vessel awaits—yet now you say I cannot?”
“You can achieve what you believe,” replied the sage. “If you believe it’s within your power—you’re right. If you believe it isn’t—you’re equally right.”
The merchant pondered these words, asked nothing more, and at dawn the next day, set sail.
Long and arduous was that voyage. Storms battered him, goods were lost, losses endured—yet fortune too bestowed lavish gifts. Suffice to say, he achieved his aim: opened a grand emporium trading wares from across the world, and circled the globe besides. Folk whispered he possessed some secret—a talisman or magic spell ensuring success. But the merchant only smiled to himself. He’d learned the sage’s lesson well: What he didn’t believe in, he avoided; what he believed in, he pursued without doubt—and so it came to pass! ⛵️
“As many people, as many opinions,” observed the Moon. “Often you’ll hear others decree what’s within your power. But in truth, only you can know! What you believe—that is what’s within your power!”
