The Fehu (FEHU) rune in the Futhark tradition is associated with the concept of “cattle” – representing not just wealth, but dynamic wealth that continuously multiplies its owner’s prosperity. While it does require effort to maintain this flow of abundance, in Gypsy magic, Fehu takes on a different nuance.
Here, it symbolizes acquisition not through labor, but through sheer luck – effortless money that seems to flow into one’s hands. This is why it was often inscribed (sometimes even doubled and mirrored!) on objects tied to gambling or money storage. For example:
- Coin purses were embroidered with Fehu on the inside, where it touched the coins.
- Gamblers would wear a leather strap on their left wrist (the “money hand,” the “luck hand”) carved with multiple Fehu runes – though cleverly disguised as simple notches (two diagonal left lines, one straight line, two diagonal right lines) to avoid detection.
Why the Double Fehu?
The Gypsies particularly loved the mirrored/double Fehu because it created a bindrune combining Fehu with Algiz (another rune they cherished). While neither rune was commonly used alone for money or protection, together they became a powerful, widespread symbol of luck and safeguarding.
Healing Properties
This rune was also used in healing, especially for:
- Bone diseases
- Internal injuries without visible symptoms
