In Gypsy magic, working with the Moon is of great importance, and many spells and rituals are based on appeals to the Moon-Gaena, using lunar energy flows for their processes. For the new lunar month, I present to you my Lunar Story.
My conversation with the Moon will allow you to hear ancient stories from Gypsy shuwanis and introduce you to the trends of the upcoming lunar month. Listen carefully, feel deeply… the Moon is speaking to you.
A short winter day ended with a crimson sunset, and early twilight descended—clear and frosty, as it often is in December. Wrapping herself in a shawl to keep warm, Shuwany hurried along the crunching path to the cherished place where she came each time to greet the birth of the new moon.
Settling on the trunk of a fallen tree, Shuwany waited, lost in her thoughts. The year was drawing to a close, yet so many tasks still demanded attention, so many plans remained unfulfilled…
“Hello!” came the Moon’s voice, awakening Shuwany from her reverie. “You seem tired tonight…”
“Oh no, not at all!” the girl tried to protest. “It’s just… winter, and I miss the sun!”
“Did you know that, long ago, the sun used to shine all the time? Let me tell you a story.”
🌞 Once upon a time, as the legend goes, the Sun never left the sky.
There was no winter, no night. People of those times knew neither poverty nor hardship, as the life-giving Sun provided them with harvests all year round. There was no lack of anything, and life flowed steadily and leisurely—for everyone except the Sun itself. It worked tirelessly, without rest, warming and illuminating the world.
Generations came and went, yet the Sun kept shining. But nothing lasts forever, and even the unyielding Sun began to grow weary. Each day it found it harder to climb to the zenith, its light dimmed, and its warmth waned, despite its efforts. This continued until one day, the Sun could no longer rise.
Darkness and cold enveloped the Earth, and fertile fields were buried under snow.
No one remembers how long this dark time lasted—maybe days, maybe years. To the frightened people, it felt like an eternity. It seemed the darkness would never end, warmth would never return, and the Sun was gone forever.
But then, just when fear had almost extinguished hope, the Sun returned. At first, it peeked out timidly, offering little warmth before retreating again. The next day, it rose slightly higher, and higher still the day after. With each passing day, it grew brighter and stronger, climbing higher into the sky. Snow melted from the fields, trees turned green again, and flowers began to bloom. From that time on, the world’s rhythm changed. Day was followed by night, summer by winter. The Sun, having exhausted its strength, would retreat, only to be reborn again, bringing new hope. 🌞
“This is how it is with people,” the Moon continued. “Worn out by struggles, a person may stray from their path or abandon their dream. But sometimes, all they need is a break—not to judge themselves too harshly, but to regain strength and move forward once more. Even the Sun needs rest! And if darkness falls and the cold comes, you know that dawn will follow, and spring will return. Remember this if the burden feels too heavy to bear.”
