In ancient times, long before Tarot cards and other paper-based divination tools, Gypsy shamans, known as Shuwany, used Gypsy Runes for divination. This oracle has its roots in shamanism and has developed over centuries into a cohesive system. It includes 18 symbols (runes) associated with natural elements and life cycles.

These runes have no connection with the Futhark runes. Their shared name stems from how the symbols were inscribed: they were carved with a ritual knife onto stones, not wood. The stones were carefully selected and placed into a special rune pouch.

Originally, the Gypsy Runes did not exist in this exact form but were rooted in a Gypsy shamanic oracle. Each sign in this oracle consisted of objects gathered over a lifetime, imbued with special significance, and empowered through rituals with spirits. This personal set would evolve, later passed to apprentices and reshaped anew. When Gypsy shamanism faded, and the knowledge passed to the Gypsy Shuwany, the oracle took on its current structure. From then on, symbols were carved on stones or glass plaques.

Important! Many confuse Shuwany Runes with Wiccan Runes. Although they share similarities—both systems use ancient symbols that gave rise to Shuwany Runes and Wiccan Runes—they differ in origin, purpose, and practices. Wiccan Runes are rooted in Western, European traditions and witchcraft, while Gypsy Runes are closely tied to the shamanic system within Gypsy culture. Working with Gypsy Runes involves engaging with the spirit of each rune and the natural forces they embody. Divination rituals often go beyond physical rune placement and incorporate spiritual practices, invoking nature’s energies and spirits to aid in interpretation. Each rune serves as a channel to communicate with the spiritual world, offering knowledge and insights from nature and the universe.

Requirements for Participants:

  • Ruk and Boler Cloth: Each participant will receive a high-resolution image link for printing on fabric at a print shop. You can also draw it yourself on a 50×50 cm cloth with fabric markers or paints. Including all labels is optional; the main feature is an eight-section wheel. Adding more details is optional but remember that fewer labels mean you may need to refer to an image, which could be distracting.
  • Runes: You can create your own runes on stone or glass plaques, or order them from a trusted artisan. Alternatively, you can assemble a shamanic oracle with unique items instead of runes. For training purposes, temporary runes are acceptable, and a custom set can be ordered later if needed.
