Lunar Tale of June by Shuwany

In Gypsy magic, working with the Moon is of great importance, and many spells and rituals are based on appeals to the Moon-Gaena, using lunar energy flows for their processes. For the new lunar month, I present to you my Lunar Story.

As always at the appointed time, Shuwany hurried to her sacred meeting place to welcome the Moon’s return. Though the hour was late, the summer forest along her path brimmed with birdsong from unseen throats hidden in dark foliage—a melody so exquisite only the deaf could fail to marvel.

“I see,” said the Moon after their greeting, “you’re enchanted by the birds’ trills! Let tonight’s tale be of this very wonder!”

In a vast, emerald forest lived an unremarkable little bird. She lacked the kite’s strength, the eagle’s majesty, the owl’s wisdom, the heron’s grace. Neither robin-bright nor cheerful as a titmouse—just a plain gray bird who shrank from singing, convinced her mediocrity deserved no audience.

She hid in ancient trees’ thick canopies, watching the vibrant avian world from her lonely perch. Thus her days might have passed—unnoticed and meaningless—until one spring transformed everything. When young leaves unfurled, flowers perfumed the air, and the sun caressed the earth (nothing lovelier after winter’s harshness!), joy overflowed her small heart… and she sang. Not by decision—no! Reason would have silenced her. But her heart’s rapture burst forth in spontaneous melody before fear could intervene.

The forest stilled in awe. Birds ceased chirping, creatures paused their scurrying, even trees hushed their rustling to hear this magic. Only when the little bird realized her voice filled the woodland did she stop—terrified of mockery. Instead, praise rained upon her! Though bashful still, from that day she sang with growing freedom, while the forest listened spellbound… for the plain gray bird was a nightingale.

“Gifts planted in your soul at birth,” murmured the Moon, “remain meaningless until you dare reveal them. Until then, you’ll never know your true nature! One might die a drab little bird, never discovering they were born to sing like the nightingale.”
