In Gypsy magic, working with the Moon is of great importance, and many spells and rituals are based on appeals to the Moon-Gaena, using lunar energy flows for their processes. For the new lunar month, I present to you my Lunar Story.
My conversation with the Moon will allow you to hear ancient stories from Gypsy shuwanis and introduce you to the trends of the upcoming lunar month. Listen carefully, feel deeply… the Moon is speaking to you.
The spring forest filled with life and the ringing trills of birds, not falling silent even late into the evening.
“How wonderful it is for the birds,” said Shuwany. “They sing happily and don’t worry about fame or wealth — all those things that poison the lives of many people.”
“That’s true,” the Moon agreed. “But birds can tell a curious story! Listen…”
🐦 Once, in a spring forest, two little birds met: one and another. They met and began to argue about which of them sang better. One said, “I’m better!” the other replied, “No, I am!” How could they decide? So they turned to an old, wise raven.
The raven judged like this: let each of them choose a tree in the forest, far apart from one another. Let them sing there for three days. Whichever gathers more listeners — all the forest folk, young and old — will be considered the better singer. And so they agreed.
On the first day of the contest, one bird flew all over the forest inviting listeners. She went to everyone: the bear, the hare, the kite, and the field mouse. She invited every creature in the forest, saying, “I’ll sing this evening on the big oak — be sure to come!” Meanwhile, the other bird didn’t go anywhere or invite anyone — from morning she sat on a tall pine tree, practicing and refining her song.
Evening came. Beneath the oak, the entire forest gathered — those with claws, those with hooves, those with wings, horns, and even those with just a tail. Everyone came! The bird flew up to a branch, spread her feathers, and began to sing. But as she sang, she kept glancing at the crowd: did they like it, were they listening closely? She worried so much about it that she kept losing her rhythm.
Meanwhile, the other bird flew onto her branch and looked around. No one had come to listen. But an agreement is an agreement — even without listeners, she had to sing! She closed her eyes and began her melody.
The next day, the animals gathered again to hear the first bird — but noticeably fewer than before. Though she flew around the forest once more, inviting everyone, she became exhausted. In the evening, she barely made it onto her branch, looked at the crowd — not everyone had come — and grew so sad that she had no mood to sing. But still, she had to — so she sang.
Meanwhile, word spread through the forest that somewhere else there was another singing bird. The forest creatures gathered to listen to her. And just like the day before, she flew onto her branch, didn’t even look around, closed her eyes, and began to sing. She sang so wholeheartedly that everyone who listened was completely captivated.
On the final day of the contest, even though the first bird once again flew tirelessly through the forest inviting listeners, everyone went to hear the other bird. Word had spread everywhere that she sang in some special, magical way. And the magic in her song was simply that she wasn’t thinking about how many listeners she had — only about singing.
Now the entire forest gathered beneath her tree. But she didn’t even notice! She continued her melodies with closed eyes, giving herself completely to the singing she loved. The listeners stood breathless — it was that beautiful.
As for the first bird, she didn’t sing at all that evening: only two elderly hedgehogs came to listen — and she decided it wasn’t worth the effort or her talent.
So the old raven declared the second bird the winner. 🐦
“That’s how it is in everything,” the Moon said. “Those who are in love with what they do, who are passionate and devoted without looking back — will achieve success. But those whose goal is only money and fame, while their work feels like routine and burden, are doomed to struggle — and their results will be doubtful.”
